The smart baby grow that monitors your baby whilst it sleeps

Babygrows can now do a whole lot more than just keep your child warm – a onesie has been developed which could save their life. Fitted with a sensor in the shape of a turtle, the Mimo Monitor garment keeps track of your baby’s breathing, pulse, temperature and body position, as well as his or her sleep patterns and activity levels. It’s one more tool to help parents hopefully prevent the tragedy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome – the unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby, usually in their sleep.

Developed by a US startup called Rest Devices, the cotton babygrow is available for infants up to a year old and has been developed in partnership with Intel and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The idea was originally marketed to medical device companies, but its inventors realised there was an untapped market out there when parents kept getting in touch.

Mimo Monitor founder Thomas Lipoma explained: “It’s a new type of technology. The chip that the monitor uses is essentially a computer built into an SD card. When the turtle snaps onto the onesie, it’ll monitor respiration, skin temperature, body position, audio and movement – and send all that information over your home’s WiFi to our servers. So anywhere in the world, you can just pull open your cellphone and see everything is okay.

“The onesie is completely machine washable and feels exactly like a normal onesie to your child. The main purpose is really just to reduce anxiety in parents. No matter what, you’re going to wake up in middle of the night thinking something’s gone wrong. This way you can see everything’s totally fine and go back to sleep.”

Technology website Techcrunch added: “For all the innovation that has come out of startups, few have addressed one of the hardest tasks in the world: caring for a newborn infant. Not just about flicking the lights on at predetermined intervals, this new generation of products has the opportunity to reshape how we think about family relationships, and through its convenience, ultimately improve what we most care about: our children.”

The company has also designed an app called Nod, which allows you to track your baby’s sleeping and feeding patterns and provides recommendations to help them sleep better.
