AI and security risks

Artificial intelligence is no longer confined to the pages of science fiction. In fact, the AI technology gradually entering our day-to-day lives is startling in its capability, whether that’s in relation to autonomous cars or online chatbots. And, while the growth of AI looks certain to improve efficiency, reduce labour costs, and boost profitability, there comes a degree of risk that exposes businesses to hitherto unknown threats.

As is so often the case with any new form of technology, there are always those that seek to capitalise and manipulate the nascent security levels that can compromise performance. And, with AI likely to permeate everything from healthcare through to the economy, the level of risk is substantial.

Malicious AI report

A detailed report compiled by 26 leading experts from around the globe entitled Malicious AI anticipates that, within the next five years, political disruption, cybercrime, and even physical attacks are likely to experience growth. Without adequate policing and security measures in place, and without a culture of honesty being present, it’s expected that the level of risk is almost certain to develop at an exponential rate.

As the report clearly states: ‘As AI capabilities become more powerful and widespread, we expect the growing use of AI systems to lead to the expansion of existing threats, the introduction of new threats and a change to the typical character of threats.’

Of course, with any major milestone in the technology industry, there is a degree of scaremongering in place – who can forget the furore around the Millennium bug? – but the report was compiled by experts for academia, industry, and charity sectors as a means of looking at ‘real world’ scenarios into the inherent risks of AI.

One scenario of note identified the potential terror threat of repurposing commercial AI systems. By taking control of autonomous drones and vehicles, the potential for causing huge atrocities suddenly becomes all-too real.

An increase in security

Security is thus of the highest importance – not just for the commercial interests of businesses engaging in AI development, but also in relation to public safety. For AI developers, therefore, investment in the development of suitable security systems to protect their products from being compromised is of fundamental importance.
